Houses

At Brixham College, our dynamic house system is designed to build community, encourage teamwork, and inspire charitable action. Each tutor group is part of one of five houses—Phoenix, Pioneer, Inspire, Venture, and Pilgrim—each supporting a local charity chosen by the students. Phoenix House fundraises for Torbay RNLI, Pioneer House supports Devon Air Ambulance, Inspire House backs Torbay Checkpoint, Venture House raises money for Rowcroft Hospice, and Pilgrim House, our Sixth Form house, champions Cancer Research UK. Throughout the year, students take part in a wide range of fundraising activities such as sponsored walks, bake sales, jumble sales, bric-a-brac stalls, car washing, and face painting, with all proceeds from our four non-uniform days divided equally among the house charities. House values are reinforced through assemblies and dedicated lessons, and this year, each house is also raising money to adopt an animal from Paignton Zoo.

Beyond fundraising, students earn house points by participating in a variety of engaging events and competitions. These include quizzes, challenges like Funky Friday, and creative contests such as the art competition, geography photography competition, bake off, Duolingo language challenges, and our much-anticipated sports day. Points accumulated throughout the year contribute to the ultimate prize—the House Cup—which is awarded to the winning house at the end of the school year, celebrating their collective achievements and spirit.

Where did the houses names comes from?

The Brixham Trawler is a type of wooden fishing boat originally developed in the small coastal town of Brixham in Devon, England, between the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The new larger Brixham trawler enabled fishermen to venture much further from their home ports in rougher weather and bring home a huge catch in comparison to the smaller boats.

The Brixham trawler, with its sleek profile and recognisable ochre sails, was the symbol of British fishing before the turn of the 20th century.
